Strangers in the night, but not the romantic kind.

Illustrations to John Uri Lloyd’s (1849-1936): Etidorhpa, or, The end of earth (1895, 2nd ed. 1896). This is a strange hollow earth fantasy novel in the wake of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). The mysterious traveller finds mushroom forests in the subterranean world — among other startling things.
This was a novel that Lovecraft admired, though it isn’t mentioned in his “Supernatural Horror in Literature”.
